The Golden Compass

I finally finished Pullman's The Golden Compass. I love Lyra and Pan, and the story itself gripped me nearly from the beginning. I've been reading a copy borrowed from MFD (My Friend's Daughter), but I think I want to buy my own copy to read again later. The biggest problem I had with Pullman was that his narrative voice was nearly condescending to Lyra in some places. It could be just a British thing, but the narrator grated on my nerves fairly often. The best parts of the book were when I didn't notice the narrator's voice, especially in the middle of the book. At the beginning and the end, the narrator's voice felt more intrusive to me. But I loved Lyra and Pan despite that. I also had a bit of a problem with credulity in a couple of places. Part of the reason why I want to read it again is to see if I missed something the first time through. The other part is that I want to pick it apart now and read it as a writer and not a reader this time. I'll be buying book two, because Lyra's dragging me into it, and out of curiosity about what Pullman could have done in book two that would have turned kalquessa completely off from this series.

I know this is kind of a rude request, and I apologize, but I'm going to make it anyhow... If you do pick the story apart as a writer and you journal your thoughts, would you put a warning in your subject or use a cut tag or something, please? I *HATE* it when people pick apart a good story and suck all the magic out if it, though I *think* I kind of understand why you'd want to. This trilogy is one of my favorite stories ever and I really don't want to lose any of that magic to someone else's analysis.

I don't think that's a particularly rude request -- and if I post it here, I'll do that for you. (And if I forget by the time I get around to it, don't be shy about reminding me!)

Thanks. :)

Book Two may not annoy you as much as it annoyed me, and I know plenty of folks who finished the trilogy even though Book 2 annoyed them. It just got really preachy and the direction the story was heading at the end of 2 made me go "Oooookaay. Right. I'm pretty sure I've seen that Star trek episode."

Hmm. Thanks for the heads up. :)
