Apex Digest

Several years ago, I met Bryn Sparks through what was then just a little MMO fan site called fanstory.com. I'm not even sure Fan Story had its own domain back then. Back then, Fan Story was solely for gamers to post fan fiction about their characters in the MMO games they played. (If you've seen their ads around and wondered about their name, that's the explanation.) Over the years, Fan Story evolved from a purely fan fiction site to a general writing site. Bryn's writing blew me away, and I'm pretty sure I told him many times that I could very easily imagine his work being published. Well, it has been, in many places. One of them is Apex Digest. Apex also publishes people like Ben Bova, James P. Hogan, Eugie Foster (eugie), and Jennifer Pelland (jenwrites) along with many other fantastic authors.

Recently, Apex Digest launched an emergency fundraiser/subscription drive (see Jason Sizemore's post for the details). Apex publishes dark SF, which isn't my cup of tea, but I've subscribed anyway because I want to support the magazine that publishes so many great authors including my friend Bryn. (I've even ordered a few back issues so that when he's A Famous Author, I can pull them out and say, "Yeah, I workshopped these stories with that guy.")

As Eugie said in her post:

Please! If you love science fiction and horror, support it. SUBSCRIBE NOW! And if you already have a subscription, consider surprising your SF/H-loving friend, neighbor, or co-worker with an early Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza/whatever subscription, or maybe a chapbook, poetry collection, or some Apex Swag.

Spread the word, too!

As of 9/21, Jason Sizemore has added a donation button to the Apex web site after receiving several requests from readers who wanted to donate money directly. He's keeping a tally of the current status of the fund drive on his livejournal if you want to keep track. In less than twenty-four hours, Apex has raised almost half of the money needed. Let's keep Apex publishing great authors!

ETA:

There is also an online raffle being held at Save Apex Digest. (via genreneep)

Here's the scoop:

There's old-fashioned raffle with amazing prizes at Save Apex Digest! You can buy a ticket to put your name in the hat to win autographed copies of books, art, videos and other strange goodies. Tickets are a dollar each. That's nothing, right? You can afford that. On Friday, September 29th, we'll draw names and hand out the prizes.

You might win an autographed book by Kevin J. Anderson, Brian Keene, David Louis Edelman, and more. Or how about a signed Alex McVey print? Maybe you'd like to have your story professionally edited? Stop by and see which things you covet.
